Introduction

First steps of feasibility studies for important structures like bridges, towers, etc include geotechnical investigations. To perform these studies, samples should be taken from underground layers and transferred to the laboratory for soil mechanics tests. Accuracy of these laboratory tests depend on different factors including staff and apparatus. To obtain a better result from the tests, a powerful and handy software is so valued.

We started producing "SMTP" since 2003 and it's update stream is still continued. This software works under Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 2003 and newer and is compatible with Windows printers. This software is registered under High Council of Informatics in IRAN Plan and Budget Org. SMTP's patent is completely belonged to "Alireza Afkhami Aghda".

SMTP software is so designed that the regular procedure of "project creation", "borehole definition", "samples definition", "data entry of tests" and "reporting" are taken into consideration by designer. Soil mechanics concerning features

We put our base on "Soil Testing Manual 2001" handbook. The procedure and calculations methods are selected to be consistent with the latest ASTM standards. To insure the usability of software we collect some sheets from a sort of soil mechanics laboratories and designed our data entry forms based on them .

Software engineering

After vision and inception phases we started to define entities and classes as well. UML and RUP were used for documentation at the beginning phases. Because of large number of records, we chose SQL server 2000 as our database which is recommended by Microsoft as a powerful DBMS. Developments are done with VS 6.0 and some third party ActiveXs were used. Some ActiveX DLLs and OCXs are designed by us to ease the update and reusability of coding process.

Ease of use is the highlight of SMTP user-friendly design. Print preview options, Save, Load, Tools, Live update and some other features make it unique.
